SUMMARY

It was a rough start to the second to last round of the WGTN surf cross season with our RD and gear organiser turning up an hour late, having had a few gear screw ups in the morning. Once they did arrive and got the course set up it was on. Even with our smallest turn out of competitors in some time the racing was fierce. WGTN has a few contenders now and there was nothing between the top 3 boats on the day.

Conditions were perfect with very little wind, clean swells and a sunny day. The swell which varied from .5m to 2m+ was the decider on who would ultimately win races, teams who managed to find clean lines got results. Most surprisingly.

Highlights of the day include Michelle from Demon Red overcoming her fear of driving in huge swell with the help of her convincing coey who really wanted to hit the waves…quote 'I didn't come all the way to Riversdale to go home without a sore ass'. Also the boys from 8&9 Ball in only their second ever race day managed a win with a broken tiller arm to boot. We saw a spectacular crash between Demon Energy Blue and 8&9 Ball who actually collided at full pace in mid air after both hitting a 2m wave, luckily both teams landed upright and no major injuries were sustained. But undoubtedly most surprising to all that know the WGTN racers is that the TBC boys managed a whole race day without a flip or a broken boat, well done!

Overall despite a small turnout it was a really fun day for all, we had only one flip despite the big surf and with the level of competition emerging in WGTN next round at Titahi Bay could be anybody's.
