SUMMARY

Otaki put on a beautiful day for WGTN branches club racing on Sat. Although the Auckland’ers would find it hard to believe we had hot sun, no wind, golden sand and ideal waters for racing. There was just enough surf to keep it tricky whilst the back straight was a dead calm drag race. More surprising than good weather in WGTN though were the results of the day with Demon Energy blue just stealing the win by only 2points. In second place was TBC who were just one broken tiller arm bolt off winning the day and in third place was Demon Energy red with our only female driver (Michelle) and her new coey. It was great to see the competitors step it up a notch with Demon Red almost taking their first win in race 4 only to be beaten on the sprint finish by less than a metre.

Lots of new faces made for an exciting day, Beertubes brought a new lightweight coey, Demon Red also had a new coey, Get Funkd has a new Coey (another female!) and Pilot with Ocky handing his boat over so he could RD. As RD he even thought he would re-write the rule book a little by putting punishments (such as starting 30metres behind everyone else) in place for teams that he felt were going too fast. Overall it was a relaxed fun day with much tighter racing that anyone expected, thanks to our RD and marshals for running the day and keeping it interesting. Next round is at awesome Riversdale beach in Wairarapa. As I write this Riversdale has no wind, it is bloody hot and has a clean 4m swell…it will be a big one!
