Round 2 National Surfcross
Despite the carnage on the previous day crews worked overnight to ensure 23 boats were on the start line at 11am on Monday.
The weather was vastly different from the previous day with drizzle and 30km onshore winds generating a 1m wind swell onto the beach.
From the start everyone knew this was to be an exciting day. In the first few heats it was dominated by the heavier crews in the boisterous surf.
However by midday the wind turned 180 degrees and was now blowing offshore and whilst flattening the surf the wind proved trying for many of the crews. This provided great excitement for the spectators gathered on the beach and included flips from UR Mama, Spaceships, Goodyear and Dribbler Team Racing plus a spectacular rollover on the beach from Blue Cougar which saw co-pilot Perrin Reilly visiting hospital with a dislocated thumb.
Race leader from Whangamata (Smuggler) had a bad day rupturing a pontoon and losing a helmet resulting in a 21st place. Entertainment award for the day must go for the crew from Hells Pizza who were so close to flipping on several occasions.
At the end of a hard 12 heats, the two finals were run with winner on the day being the unbeaten Novo Technical Services closely followed by Jungle Coffee and PBS Group.
