Round 1 National Surfcross
22 of the 23 entered boats for the national series turned up to a brilliant sunny day in Whangamata but no surf!
Conditions were flat with light offshore winds which meant the lightweight crews would definitely be advantaged.
Race director Gary Morrison outlined his requirements for fair and safe racing at drivers briefing and racing commenced at 11am.
Racing was close and was without incident for most of the day but with mixed results for many of the crews, whilst providing exciting entertainment for the 4000 plus beachgoers enjoying the sun and the spectacle that is Thundercat racing.
After 4 sets of heats for each boat the cumulative points were added to determine the bottom ten boats for the B final and the top ten boats for the A final.
Due to misfortunes on the day the B final was made up of several top 10 contenders from 2009. The stakes were high and resulted in a spectacular incident on D buoy with Jagermeister puncturing and injuring co-pilot Scott Munro plus Blackpepper and Quin Buildings both suffering engine damage in the crash. B final winner was Carson Construction who passed the old boys from Plumbquick in the run up the beach. The A final was less eventful with Smuggler Boats (Logan Pringle and Sarah Barrell) taking out the day ahead of second place Jungle Coffee and UR Mama in third.
